Learning to quilt

July 13, 2009 § Leave a comment

Last week, Renata passed me a quilt she abandoned 7 years ago.  I was elated to have a new project to work on.  She showed me her a bedspread her grandmother gifted her for her high school graduation – completely hand-quilted, and incredibly beautiful.  There is something in me that really loves these items so carefully crafted by hand in an old-fashioned way.  I have always loved the idea of quilting, but have been intimidated by the process.

One of the beautiful things about quilting is how it was done in the past in order to salvage old clothing and items that were no longer functional.  The fabric was saved and each bit sewn together, giving it a new purpose and new life.  There’s something so deeply meaningful about that.  I remembered when Mike preached a sermon series on heaven.  There was a focus on how the Lord would make all things new.  M wanted to know if she could live in the New Berkeley in heaven.  It’s just a wonderful thought that he makes all things new.
